Top Azeri prosecutor pledges to disclose general’s murder

BAKU – Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov has voiced confidence that the killers of Air Force commander Rail Rzayev murdered in 2009 will be exposed and brought to book.

"A time will come when the individuals who arranged and committed this crime will be exposed and held accountable," Garalov told journalists.

Lt.-Gen. Rzayev was shot dead in the capital, Baku, while in his car in February 2009. Rzayev, 64, who also acted as the commander of Azerbaijan’s Air Defense Troops and Deputy Minister of Defense, died after being shot once in the head outside his home in the Yasamal district. President Ilham Aliyev condemned the crime and ordered to quickly investigate it. Investigators from the Prosecutor-General’s Office, the Interior and National Security Ministries teamed up to disclose the crime.

Garalov said that the group of investigators is holding discussions chaired by First Deputy Prosecutor-General Rustam Usubov once a week to ensure disclosing the case.

"If such hard work had not been done on the case, disclosure of other related crimes would not have been ensured."

According to Garalov, foreign experts have been invited to assist in disclosing the general’s murder and relevant expertise was being carried out.
