European court upholds Azeri singer’s plea on elections
BAKU – A European rights court has upheld the plea by an Azerbaijani singer claiming her rights were violated during the 2005 parliamentary elections.
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) said Thursday that Flora Karimova is entitled to 59,100 euros in damages to be paid by the Azerbaijani government, according to the ECHR website.
Karimova had been nominated to stand in the previous parliament elections by the main opposition bloc Azadlig. She gained the most votes, according to a constituency election commission, but the Central Election Commission invalidated the tallies.
