OSCE urges equal opportunities for Azeri media to cover elections
BAKU – Head of OSCE Baku Office, Mr. Ali Bilge Cankorel, urged greater role for Azeri media in covering the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Addressing the conference on the role of media in covering elections in Baku on Tuesday, the OSCE official has expressed his confidence that further steps will be made to improve media’s involvement in the parliamentary elections due this fall.
"The pluralistic media plays a special role in securing democratic elections," Mr. Cankorel said.
Earlier, the OSCE Office in Baku has made proposals on amending the Electoral Code of Azerbaijan, which urged the media outlets to be granted equal opportunities to cover the electoral process.
The National Broadcasting Council is meant to create the necessary conditions for election coverage on the television channels, Cankorel said.
"Moreover, private television channels should devote more time to the election campaign."
Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for November 7. The previous elections were held in November of 2005.
Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority of votes system in 125 constituencies.
