Azeri watchdog rules out state funding of TV channels
BAKU - Azerbaijan’s broadcasting body on Thursday ruled out that private television channels may be financed by the government.
Nushiravan Maharramli, the chairman of the National Television and Radio Council (NTRC), said that currently he doesn't see any need for private channels to be funded by the state.
"There is a big gap between the print media and the TV channels, since the latter enjoys a broader audience than the print media. As a result, TV channels get more from advertising," Maharramli was quoted by local media reports as saying.
For this reason, the print media is the one which needs the state support, not television, he said.
Maharramli did not rule out state funding for private television
channels in the future.
Azerbaijan has eight nationwide TV channels, as well as 14 regional
TV channels and 13 radio stations.
