Azeri opposition lawmaker’s suit against ministry upheld

5 August 2010 08:42 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU - The Baku Court of Appeals has upheld a plea filed by opposition lawmaker against the Ministry of Labor and Social Security

Panah Huseyn, an MP from opposition Musavat party, had appealed to the ministry requesting a list of people receiving social allowances in the Sabirabad district where he was elected MP. But the labor ministry declined the request, saying citizens receiving state assistance do not want their names to be disclosed.

The MP’s lawsuit was earlier rejected by the Yasamal district court. But the appeals court overruled the decision on Wednesday and issued a ruling obliging the ministry to reply to Huseyn’s query.

The lawmaker says his suit was based on circulating reports about an alleged embezzlement of state budget funds worth $200 million manats ($250 million) allocated for social aid. The ministry rebuffed misappropriation allegations.

Social aid began to be provided in Azerbaijan in the summer of 2006. About 800,000 people receive such assistance in the country with a population of about 9 million.
