New OSCE PA chief favors Azerbaijan, lawmaker says
BAKU - The new president of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Greek
lawmaker Petros Efthimiou has "a very positive attitude" toward
Azerbaijan, an Azerbaijani parliament member has said.
Eldar Ibrahimov, a member of the Azerbaijani delegation at the assembly, said he was, himself, a close friend of Efthimiou.
"He has been at OSCE PA for a long time," Ibrahimov said. "He and I are represented in the assembly’s committee on economics. A while ago, when the committee’s deputy chairman was being elected, my candidacy was nominated along with his. Then, I withdrew my nomination in his favor. We have been friends ever since."
Ibrahimov also said the Azerbaijani delegation had supported the election of the new president, given that his opponent, a Canadian lawmaker, was somewhat pro-Armenian. According to Ibrahimov, Efthimiou is "a closer person to Azerbaijan" than his predecessor, Joao Soares.
Regarding the qualities of the new OSCE PA chief, Ibrahimov described him as a very skilful diplomat.
After winning the elections, Efthimiou pledged to visit Azerbaijan in September.*
