Azerbaijani law enforcers impounded an unprecedented quantity of drugs - 1.1 tons - in 2007, or three times over the volume confiscated in previous years, an official from the UN Baku office said.
Head of the office's department on work with law-enforcement agencies, Mazahir Afandiyev, said various types of narcotics had been impounded. "But the most aggravating is the fact that the amount of heroin that is considered the heaviest among narcotic substances increased last year."
Describing the situation worldwide, Afandiyev said the amount of drugs grown in Afghanistan, which produces 90% of drugs, has risen. According to the UN's latest estimates, a record 8,200 tons of narcotics were produced in this country in 2007. The figure represents an increase from the 4,000 tons registered in 2006.
Afandiyev said Azerbaijan has an extremely conducive geographic location for drug smuggling.
"The country's being one of the newly independent states and its location on the crossroads of the East and West has drawn the attention of narco-mafia. Therefore, attempts are frequently made to smuggle Afghan-made narcotics to CIS and Europe through Iran and South Caucasus states," the UN representative said.
