Year of Ecology in Azerbaijan: Hyatt takes the lead
The world`s environmental challenges, and global
warming in particular, have been in international spotlight in
recent years. Though the latest United Nations Climate Change
Conference, held in Copenhagen in late 2009, failed to take a
unanimous decision on emissions, global warming challenges remain
high on the international agenda.
The announcement of the ``Year of Ecology`` in Azerbaijan in 2010, particularly the latest initiative of Hyatt Hotels Baku and waste management company Tamiz Shahar JSC, could be considered as Azerbaijan`s contribution to the solution of the world`s environmental issues.
Hyatt Hotels Baku and Tamiz Shahar are taking the lead in several waste management and recycling projects. In today`s world, with depleting natural resources and an increase in pollution, they are assuming social responsibility to commit to the recycling of waste and reduction of energy usage.
Waste management and energy saving make a difference! Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 1,450 liters of oil, 2.3 m3 of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water. This way, recycling paper contributes to water savings, energy savings and less air pollution.
Tamiz Shahar and Hyatt Hotels Baku have joined efforts in a waste management and recycling project as pioneers in Azerbaijan.
The environment concerns all of us, and both individuals and leading global companies are now taking the lead and focusing on ``green`` initiatives to protect the environment.
The successful co-operation between Hyatt Hotels Baku and Tamiz Shahar is based on mutual genuine interest in green initiatives and a strong social and environmental engagement from both parties. Hyatt Hotels Baku delivers the complete segregated waste by recyclables like PET bottles, glass, paper, cardboard, aluminium etc. Tamiz Shahar manages the segregated waste properly by delivering to appropriate recycling industries.
Hyatt Hotels Baku was also one of the only two companies in Baku to participate in Earth Hour on March 27, 2010. Most lights were switched off or dimmed to a minimum for one hour at 8.30 pm. Globally, Earth Hour 2010 was the biggest Earth Hour ever and the largest global climate change initiative, with 128 countries and territories joining this global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common - our planet.
Hyatt Hotels Baku is part of Hyatt Hotels Corporation, which has already been working globally for years with green initiatives and social responsibility. Each of Hyatt`s Green Teams around the world strives to make a difference locally and collectively, and they aim to make a difference globally. More information about Hyatt`s environmental projects is available at www.hyattearth.com.
Waste management company Tamiz Shahar JSC chiefly aims to improve the environmental situation in Baku by building and managing solid waste placement and disposal in accordance with today`s modern standards. More information is available at www.tamizshahar.az.
