Azerbaijan reviews new military strategy
President Ilham Aliyev has sent a draft of the doctrine outlining Azerbaijan’s future military policies to the Milli Majlis (parliament).
Zahid Oruj, a member of the parliamentary committee on defense and security, said the draft Military Doctrine focuses on bolstering Azerbaijan’s defense industry rather than purchasing weapons abroad. It primarily points out that Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan is the main source of threats for the turbulent region.
"The Military Doctrine sets out a task before the armed forces’ defense entities to free those territories from occupation. Clashes over energy resources, separatism, terror, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, their transportation from one territory to another, and other similar issues are expressed as problems for Azerbaijan’s military security in this region."
According to Oruj, the draft doctrine does not cite Russia or Iran. "However, among the enumerated problems, it shows where threats to Azerbaijan may come from."
The lawmaker added that the document does not specify Azerbaijan’s strategic allies, either.
The draft will be tabled in the defense and security committee on Thursday and further put on the agenda of the Milli Majlis extraordinary session in mid-June.*
