California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has congratulated
Azerbaijanis on May 28, the Day of Republic, in what has become a
tradition in past years.
In a letter, Schwarzenegger underscored the special role played by the Azerbaijani community in the development of his state, Azerbaijan’s consulate in Los Angeles has told AssA-Irada.
On this occasion, the consulate has received another congratulatory message from the San-Jose city hall.
May 28 has been announced Azerbaijan National Day in California’s Orange County, according to an official decision.
The People’s Republic of Azerbaijan, the first-ever secular democratic republic in the world with Islamic population, was established on May 28, 1918. The republic that existed for only 23 months collapsed due to the invasion of Azerbaijan by Soviet Russia in April 1920. Azerbaijan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.*
