Azeri scholar gets three-year jail sentence in Iran
An Azerbaijani scientist has been sentenced to three years
imprisonment in neighboring Iran, according to the head of the
committee for his rights.
Soltanhamid Malikov said Rashid Aliyev had contacted him over the phone and informed him about the Iranian court’s ruling, which was issued without the defendant present.
Malikov said the Iranian authorities’ measure was incomprehensible. "We don’t understand why Rashid Aliyev faced punitive action."
Aliyev, who served as a senior scholar at a laboratory of the Baku State University’s physics scientific research institute, has been held behind bars in Iran since October 2009. While working in the neighboring country under a contract, Aliyev was charged with spying for Azerbaijan, namely, with transferring data on laser technologies to Azerbaijan.*
