Insane asylum riot put down
Special troops put down a riot staged by mentally ill inmates at a
hospital in the Mashtagha settlement of Baku last Wednesday
night.
The convicts had tried to carry out "mob law" over one of their fellows and launched disturbances after hospital workers moved to thwart the attempt, the senior doctor on duty at the special clinic said.
Hospital officials had to call a special police unit to restore order. Emergency measures were taken, in particular, the most violent patients were placed in separate cells. No one was hurt or managed to escape during the riot, the source said.
Some 100 patients are receiving treatment at the mental institution.
The clinic was established in the post-Soviet period. During the USSR times, Azeris who had been assigned to undergo mandatory treatment were sent to special clinics in Russia.
