Chinese MP urges Armenia to enforce UN resolutions
A Chinese lawmaker has called on Armenia to immediately enforce
the United Nations resolutions on its pullout from the occupied
territories of Azerbaijan.
"China has been a country that supports Azerbaijan’s territorial
integrity. We respect the UN resolutions on Azerbaijan’s
territories under occupation. The principles of international law
are to be taken as a basis in resolving any conflict," Ley Ming
Chieu, deputy head of the Chinese parliament’s committee for
national minorities, said during a visit to Baku on Thursday.
During a meeting at the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani parliament),
Chieu said that, despite calls by the world community, Azerbaijan’s
territorial integrity has not yet been restored. "We hope that
interested parties will achieve a solution of the conflict
peacefully and through negotiations."
Armenia’s troops have been occupying over 20 percent of
Azerbaijan’s territory since a lengthy war in the 1990s, despite
four UN resolutions on unconditional pullout of its armed forces
and condemnation by a number of other international groups. The
ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but the OSCE-brokered peace
talks have been largely fruitless so far.*
