Azeri gov’t to give ‘green light’ to protests ahead of vote
The Azerbaijani government is expected to provide
suitable conditions for public protests by all political parties
during the campaigns for this year’s parliamentary elections, a
presidential administration official has said.
Ali Hasanov, the head of the Presidential Administration
socio-political department, told reporters that if the opposition
seeks to conduct any public action complying with the law on the
eve of the elections, the authorities would "turn on the green
light" for this.
The Baku Mayor’s Office has lately declined several consecutive
requests by opposition parties to hold rallies and pickets. Hasanov
commented that the refusals were due to the approaching elections.
"As the election approaches, the socio-political climate in
Azerbaijan is somewhat becoming more active," the presidential
administration official added.
The parliamentary poll will be held in 125 constituencies based on
the majority-of-votes system this fall.*
