Azerbaijan seen as key US ally, regional peacemaker
US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg has pointed to Azerbaijan’s importance as Washington’s ally and a key player in promoting regional peace.
"Azerbaijan is a crucial ally of the United States and a powerful force for supporting peace and stability in the Caucasus," Steinberg told foreign journalists.
He was quoted by Russia’s state news agency ITAR-TASS as saying that Washington is working very closely with Baku on a wide range of issues and is resolutely committed to the Minsk process on settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict.
"We know that these issues are complicated for all sides involved and that we need to find a way to overcome outstanding differences."
According to Steinberg, the U.S. is confident that "deeper integration in the Caucasus would meet the interests of the whole region over the long term."
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. The U.S. co-chairs the OSCE’s Minsk Group, which is working to reach a peaceful resolution of the dispute.*
