Paper editor questioned after publishing controversial report
Rauf Arifoglu, the editor-in-chief of Azerbaijan’s
Yeni Musavat newspaper, was called to the Ministry of National
Security (MNS) on Tuesday. Arifoglu answered questions regarding
the jailed journalist Eynulla Fatullayev’s recent statement
alleging the ministry’s involvement in the 2005 murder of the
controversial Monitor magazine editor Elmar Huseynov.
"Investigators spent three hours trying to clarify the reasons and motives of our newspaper’s publishing Fatullayev’s statement," the Yeni Musavat editor told the press.
"Representatives of the secret service bodies, pressuring me, suggested that I refrain from following up on the topic, because journalists’ writings belittle the MNS’ image and hamper unraveling Elmar Huseynov’s murder," Arifoglu claimed.
Fatullayev, the editor of Gundalik Azerbaijan newspaper, made the allegations in his letter lately sent to the press.
