Baku warns world won’t recognize ‘election’ in rebel region
The so-called elections planned by the separatist regime in Upper
(Nagorno) Garabagh, an Azerbaijani region under Armenian
occupation, will not be recognized by the world community, the
Azerbaijani government warned.
Bako Saakian, the leader of the self-proclaimed Upper Garabagh republic, on Friday signed a decree scheduling another "election" to the separatist entity’s national assembly for May 23, 2010, Novosti Armenii news agency reported.
"The ‘election" in Upper Garabagh will not be recognized by the international community, and this process will not be taken seriously," said Elkhan Polukhov, the spokesman for the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry.
"Armenia’s political elite will thus put itself in an awkward situation and once again confirm its policy of occupation," he added.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Though the separatist regime in Upper Garabagh declared so-called independence at the time of the Soviet collapse in 1991, this "independence", which blatantly tramples on international law, has not been recognized by the world community.*
