Defense minister claims Armenia ‘not afraid of war’
Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian has claimed his country "is not afraid" of what he called Azerbaijan’s belligerent statements.
He alleged at a ceremony devoted to the eighteenth anniversary of the Armenian military that the country’s armed forces are reliably protecting its borders.
"We have a victorious army but support peace. We are staying vigilant and are continuously modernizing," the defense chief claimed.
Ohanian also believes that the Armenian military has strengthened after the war fought with Azerbaijan in the early 1990s and is currently one of the most powerful militaries in the region.
Armenia has had territorial claims against Azerbaijan, another South Caucasus neighbor, since the early 1990s. The country’s armed forces have been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory, defying international law. Azerbaijani officials have repeatedly warned against Yerevan’s policy of aggression, saying the country’s land will be freed at any cost.*
