Azerbaijan to attend London conference on Afghanistan
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov will take part in an international conference on providing assistance to Afghanistan in London on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Elkhan Polukhov said.
The conference will aim to help the international community solve the question of how to help Afghanistan stabilize the situation in the country and create a functioning state. The U.N. is the coordinator of these efforts.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon will co-chair the conference. The other two co-chairs of the forum will be Afghan President Hamid Karzai and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
The one-day event will bring together ministers from more than 60 countries as well as representatives of several leading international organizations.
About 90 Azerbaijani peacekeepers are serving within the international security assistance force in Afghanistan. They carry out patrols in Kabul.*
