Azeri NGOs honor massacre victims
Azerbaijan’s National Non-Governmental Organizations
Forum conducted an event Tuesday to commemorate those killed on the
streets of Baku Jan. 20, 1990, a year before the fall of the Soviet
rule.
Rauf Zeyni, the Forum president, said the tragic developments represent a glorious page in the history of national liberation.
Zeyni said this aggression committed against the Azerbaijani people has not yet been given due political and legal assessment on the international scale. According to him, 69 out of the 100 volumes of investigation materials on the Jan. 20 tragedy had been sent from Baku to Moscow, to the former USSR Prosecutor-General’s Office, but have yet to be returned, despite Azerbaijan’s repeated calls.
The USSR leadership, which was trying to maintain the Communist regime in Azerbaijan and strangle the unfolding national freedom movement, pulled troops into Baku early on January 20, 1990. 132 people were killed, including women, children and the elderly, and 612 others were injured on that tragic day, according to official sources.*
