Armenian family crossed to Azerbaijan - report
An Armenian national crossed over to Azerbaijan together with
his family on Sunday evening, Novosti Armenii news agency quoted
the country’s Defense Ministry as saying.
Yegishe Gevorkyan, 52, is said to have entered the Azerbaijani
enclave of Nakhchivan from the Yeraskh region, driving a car with
his wife, and three, six and seven-year-old children, ignoring
Armenian frontier guards’ warnings. Azerbaijani servicemen
reportedly fired warning shots.
According to the Armenian ministry, Gevorkyan previously stood
trial eight times over banditry, stealing cars and other
crimes.
Armenia said it had informed international aid groups about the
incident.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two
decades. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's
internationally recognized territory since the early 1990s. The
ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but efforts by international
mediators have been largely fruitless so far, and sporadic clashes
on the frontline continue.*
