Postal stamp on occupied Azeri town released in U.S.
The first-ever postal stamp dedicated to the ancient Azerbaijani
town of Shusha currently under Armenian occupation has been
released in the United States.
According to the US Postal Service, the stamp, printed during the Christmas break, is enjoying high demand in the country. Though its face value is $4.5, it has been selling for as much as $18.95 during the holidays. A Postal Service official said the stamp has been developed by US Azerbaijanis but many people of other nationalities are among its buyers.
Shusha is located in the Armenia-occupied Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh region of Azerbaijan. The town was founded in the 1750s. Shusha has been under Armenian occupation since May 1992. 200 people were killed, 150 became disabled and about 22,000 people were ousted from their homes during its invasion.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s which claimed some 30,000 lives. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan’s territory since then, ignoring international law.*
