Azerbaijan drawing closer to Russia: Stratfor
Azerbaijan is considering membership in the Collective Security
Treaty Organization (CSTO), the military arm of the former Soviet
bloc CIS, influential US analytical center Stratfor claims.
The CSTO, which was set up by Russia in 1992, also comprises Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
"A number of former Soviet states, including Azerbaijan, have not joined the group and have defended their independence, ‘until recently,’" Stratfor said.
The analysts opined that Azerbaijan’s reconsidering its position has been prompted by the latest developments and the lack of progress in talks on settling its long-standing conflict with Armenia.*
