Kazakhstan ‘neutral’ on Garabagh conflict, report claims
Kazakhstan adheres to a neutral position in the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict, the country’s Charge d’Affaires in Armenia has said, according to reports.
Panarmenian news portal claimed quoting Nurbolat Alimbayev that an erroneous opinion has shaped that Astana supports Baku’s stance on the issue.
Alimbayev reportedly said that during Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the OSCE, which begins in 2010, the Central Asian state has no intention to meddle in the problems facing the South Caucasus region but could facilitate Garabagh settlement, if necessary.
The diplomat also said that, as an OSCE chair, Kazakhstan will make every effort to ensure that the organization’s Minsk Group, which is brokering Garabagh settlement, works to the full of its capabilities.
Of note, the Kazakh government has repeatedly stated its support on the highest level for Azerbaijan’s stance in the Garabagh conflict and a solution complying with the country’s territorial integrity.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for nearly two decades. Armenian armed forces have been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory since the early 1990s, defying international law.*
