26 convicted over Baku mosque blast

26 individuals charged with staging a deadly terror attack at a
mosque in Baku in 2008 and other crimes were handed down jail
sentences at the end of a trial in the Grave Crimes Court on
Thursday.
23 Azerbaijani citizens who are members of the gang, known as "Forest Brothers", were convicted to between five and a half and 15 years in prison, while two Turks – two to six years, and one Russian national will serve 15 years in jail.
According to the indictment, the defendants, having conspired with two individuals who hail from the Zagatala district, had sought to spark unrest in Azerbaijan and undermine the country’s state system.
Two people were killed and 19 others injured after unknown individuals threw two hand grenades during a prayer at the Abu Bakr mosque located in the Narimanov district of Baku on August 17, 2008.
The shrine, which has been shut down, was mainly attended by the followers of Wahhabism.*
