Azerbaijan warns citizens against visiting three Islamic states

8 September 2009 22:37 (UTC+04:00)
The Azerbaijani government has warned citizens against traveling to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan, saying the situation in the three Islamic states makes visiting them dangerous.
The Foreign Ministry said on its website that hotels, government buildings and other structures in Afghanistan are potential targets due to terrorism and rifts between religious groups, and the Ministry warned there is a risk of an attack at any of these facilities.
Further, the statement said the airport and foreign pilot crews had been repeatedly attacked in the Afghan capital, Kabul, using suicide bombers, missiles, explosives and mines.
``The roads leading to and surrounding the airport are extremely dangerous, as well. Overland travel to the areas around Kabul poses a particular threat and has been banned by the Afghan government,`` the statement said.
In the warning on Tajikistan, it said that, though the overall situation in the country is stable, traveling to the territories bordering on Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan is extremely dangerous, as there are areas where mines have been planted.
As for Pakistan, the mounting terrorism threat and stand-off between religious groups makes visiting the country dangerous, as well. The ministry warned that numerous attacks and attempts on the lives of government officials, in particular, foreign citizens and travelers, have occurred there. Also, the number of kidnappings and taking hostages of foreign nationals by terror groups has increased in Pakistan.
Major hotels frequented by foreigners are among key potential targets of terrorists. Moreover, there is a threat of attacks at mosques, churches and a number of government buildings.
The Foreign Ministry said it bears no responsibility for any incidents that might occur during visits to the listed countries by Azerbaijani citizens.
Earlier, the ministry issued similar warnings about visiting Somalia, Honduras, Nigeria, Indonesia and Mexico.
