EU office to open in weeks
A representation of the European Union will open in Azerbaijan in
several weeks, a senior EU official said.
The Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Benita Ferrero-Waldner told a recent meeting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg that drawing the South Caucasus republics to the New Neighborhood Policy would bring them closer to European values step by step. "The European Commission intends to present a report on the materialization of the Spring Plan of Action. A great deal of work needs to be done in the area of human rights and legal state-building. Cooperation should be stepped up in the region in all fields, including energy, transport and environmental protection," Ferrero-Waldner said.
She said the EU hoped for stabilization of the regional situation and the speadiest resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict and the disputes over Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia, which impede the development of countries.
"South Caucasus is a priority for us. The EU is ready to render assistance to the conflicting sides in the drastic solution of the problem if they demonstrate mutual trust," Ferrero-Waldner said.
Azerbaijan signed the Action Plan within the New Neighborhood Policy with the EU in November 2006. The document outlines cooperation with the 27-member union in the coming years.
