Azerbaijan`s first lady offers amnesty
Azerbaijan`s First Lady and parliament member
Mehriban Aliyeva has submitted an amnesty bill to the Milli Majlis
(parliament).
The document envisions the release of those who had received light jail sentences, have already served part of their imprisonment terms, were handed down suspended sentences, fined, and others. It will be discussed in parliament on Friday.
The legislature earlier approved a draft law on an amnesty act initiated by Aliyeva in May 2007. The document covered about 9,000 prisoners, of whom 1,500 were pardoned.
