UN body adopts report on Azeri rights record
The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a report
reviewing progress in the implementation of Azerbaijan`s
commitments on human rights. The government is expected to respond
after familiarizing itself with the report, the head of the
Azerbaijani UN representation in Geneva, Elchin Amirbayov,
said.
He emphasized that although details of the document, which was
passed unanimously, have not been released, the document is seen by
the government as being generally constructive. "The voting
procedure proceeded very constructively as well. The provisions,
articles and comments cited in that report will now be analyzed by
the Azerbaijani government and the issue of their enforcement will
be looked into."
The UN council`s taskforce recommended that Azerbaijan increase
press freedoms to meet international standards, comprehensively
investigate cases of alleged prosecution and violence against
journalists, and reconsider its recent decision to halt the
broadcasts of foreign radio stations on national airwaves.
Azerbaijan is a member of the UN council. The situation in its
member states is reviewed once every four years.
