Armenian truce violations persist in 2007
Armenian armed forces subjected the positions of the Azerbaijani army to sustained fire in 2007, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry spokesman Eldar Sabiroglu told the press.
The ceasefire breaches were committed mainly in Aghdam, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Terter, while truce violations in other frontline districts were relatively rare. The skirmishes resulted in casualties on both sides, the ministry official said, but he did not spell out the figures.
Sabiroglu reminded that Baku has repeatedly raised the issue of ceasefire breaches by Armenia, which occupies part of Azerbaijani land, in international organizations, but Yerevan continues to violate international law.
The ministry spokesman noted that the OSCE conducted frontline monitoring 16 times throughout the year in the Gazakh, Goranboy, Aghdam, Terter, Fuzuli, Khojavand and Tovuz districts.
Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized territory since the early 1990s, in defiance of international law and UN resolutions. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks have been fruitless so far.
