Forgery of intellectual property in int`l limelight
The international battle to prevent the theft of
Azerbaijan`s cultural wealth by Armenians should be strengthened,
participants at Friday`s event held in Baku said.
Attendees of the international seminar on issues regarding the protection of intellectual property rights and fighting piracy emphasized that efforts by Armenians to take over the neighboring country`s folk masterpieces, songs and dances, as well as other works, have occurred on a wide scale in recent years.
Speakers noted that repeated warnings issued to Yerevan by international groups over the violations of intellectual property rights have been ignored.
International experts also stressed the importance of waging a resolute fight against such detrimental actions by Armenia. According to Greek expert Anastasios Mantelis, the issue of protecting intellectual property should be revisited in Armenia proper.
The Center for Intellectual Property will be set up soon in cooperation with the Azerbaijan Agency of Copyrights to wage a substantial battle against such violations, the head of the Agency, Kamran Imanov, said. "Along with countering Armenian falsifications, the Center will work to fight piracy in Azerbaijan," noted Imanov.
Imanov said there were quite a few people committing piracy in the country. Such violations take place not only in the field of culture but also in the area of computer software where copyright infringements are as high as 90%.
"A slightly smaller percentage is observed in other CIS states, as opposed to European countries where the rate of using stolen computer programs is very low."
Imanov said other cases of piracy occur mostly in the areas of CD, DVD production and the publishing industry. About 70-80% of compact disks are forged while 35-40% of publications are products of piracy.
Other speakers at the seminar spoke of the economic importance of intellectual property and suggested implementing joint projects in the field.
Participants in the event, organized by the Agency of Copyrights and the local representation of the European Union, underlined the importance of protecting intellectual property rights in a world of increasing globalization. They also said a respective national strategy and a draft law were in the making in Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan has been a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization since 1995.
