Film on Azerbaijan’s 19th century Germans in the making
BAKU – A feature film is being shot about the Germans who lived in Azerbaijan in the 19th century.
Well-known director Ogtay Mirgasymov has begun work on the adventure film, titled "Return without revenge", at the Azerbaycanfilm film studio based on his own script. The first scenes of the movie, which will mostly shoot in the Goygol region, take place outside a Lutheran church built by the Germans there in the 19th century.
The film tells the story of a German family that was forced out of the region shortly before the outbreak of World War II in 1941. Local residents appear in the movie as well.
Goygol residents say they are keen on starring in the film. Those appearing in the film are being paid small amounts of money.
One of these local residents says: "Germans lived here at the time, and the film describes their ouster and exile in 1937. We feel as if we are back in 1941-45. It is fascinating."
Starring in the state-financed film alongside Azerbaijani actors are Georgian, Russian and German actors.
The residential area, presently titled Goygol, had been called Helenendorf from 1815, after Czarist Russia settled Germans there. During the Soviet times, most German residents were resettled to other parts of the USSR from this settlement, when World War II began.
