Prominent Azeri writer commemorated
Azerbaijan`s literary community marked the 95th
birthday of the late prominent writer and playwright Ilyas
Afandiyev on May 26. A gathering was held at Afandiyev`s grave at
the Alley of Honors to commemorate the outstanding personality.
The event, attended by Azerbaijani scholars and culture figures, parliament members, writers and poets, Afandiyev`s students and close friends, began with opening remarks from Abulfaz Garayev, Minister of Culture and Tourism.
Also, the son of the deceased writer, Deputy Prime Minister Elchin Afandiyev, chairman of the Union of Writers, the writer Anar, the rector of the Azerbaijan Music Academy Farhad Badalbayli, national poet Zalimkhan Yagub and others spoke of Afandiyev`s voluminous 60-year work and his invaluable contribution to the development of the country`s theatrical art and fictional prose.
The speakers emphasized that the renowned writer, who rejected Communist ideology, reflected and conveyed to the broad public the historical realities of Azerbaijan in his work.
The deputy prime minister, recollecting memories about his father, noted that he had courageously covered topics banned by the Soviet government in Azerbaijani literature, without holding back.
"After the fall of Soviet rule, the creative path of numerous writers and poets collapsed as well," Afandiyev recalled. "But Ilyas Afandiyev will eternally live on in our hearts owing to his enormous convictions and courage."
