"Leyli and Majnun" opera to be staged in Moscow

"Leyli and Majnun" masterpiece by genius composer Uzeir Hajibeyli will be staged in Moscow.

The work will be premiered at the Crocus City Hall, on October 16, Azertac reported. The main roles will be performed by People's Artist of Azerbaijan Mansum Ibrahimov and young vocalist Arzu Aliyeva.

The opera will be staged by Honored Artist of Azerbaijan Hafiz Guliyev, art director- Rafiz Ismayilov, choirmaster Sevzikhan Serderov and ballet master Yuliana Alikishizade.

The first opera to a libretto by the eminent composer Uzeir Hajibeyli, based on the tragedy of Fizuli “Leili and Majnun” is the first opera not only in Azerbaijan, but also the entire Muslim East.

"Leyli and Majnun" is a tragic love story, in which the male character Majnun (literally meaning "crazy" in Arabic) goes mad because he cannot be with his beloved Leyli.

The most popular version of this love story "Leyli and Majnun" was penned by Nizami Ganjavi (1141-1209), who lived and died in Ganja.
