"Giselle" to be staged in Baku

The Azerbaijani State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater will stage the ballet "Giselle" by Adolphe Adam on October 1, Trend Life reported.

Tatiana Golyakova, prima ballerina of Ukrainian National Opera and Ballet Theater was invited to perform the role of Giselle.

Golyakova has already performed in Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, Belgium, USA, France, Japan, Holland and Spain. The foreign press and theatre critics highly appreciated her skills and artistry.

The winner of international contests, Stanislav Olshansky will be performing the role of count Albrecht.

The role of Myrtha will be played by a young ballerina, laureate of the international ballet competition in Germany, Ayan Eyvazova.

The performance will be conducted by People's artist Javanshir Jafarov.

The romantic ballet in two acts was first performed in 1841.

The ballet is about a peasant girl named Giselle, who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is betrothed to another. The Wilis, a group of supernatural women who dance men to death, summon Giselle from her grave. They target her lover for death, but Giselle's great love frees him from their grasp.

The performance was an unqualified triumph. Giselle became hugely popular and was staged at in Europe and the United States.
