Cotton-growing facing tough times, say experts
The harvesting of cotton in Barda and Agjabadi, two
of Azerbaijan`s districts that are advanced in cotton-growing, have
dwindled by 50% this season. Farmers said this drop was due to low
purchase prices, saying that selling a kg of cotton for only 0.33
manats (40 cents) does not even cover the expenses of growing the
crop, not to mention profits.
Industry experts say that if low cotton prices continue, arable land reserved for cotton will decrease next year and a more profitable crop will be sown there instead.
52,000 tons of cotton have been picked in the country this year, about 50% less than in 2007, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
