US Commerce Dept. opens office in Azerbaijan

3 October 2008 23:38 (UTC+04:00)
The US Department of Commerce opened an office in Azerbaijan on Friday.
"This indicates the growing interest of American exporters in the Azerbaijani market and opens up great opportunities for boosting economic relations between the two countries," said Paul Dyck, the Department`s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Europe.
Dyck, speaking at a reception in Baku to inaugurate the office attended by representatives of the US Chamber of Commerce, said that the services to be provided include counsel, market research, legal advice and assistance in seeking business partners.
He noted that as Azerbaijan continues its course of reform in its transition to a market economy, trade relations between the two countries would grow on a larger scale.
Ambassador Anne Derse, in her remarks at the event, welcomed the opening of the office providing commercial services, which will operate under the supervision of the US embassy for the time being. She said the United States has deep and permanent interests in Azerbaijan, emphasizing that the strategic partnership between the two countries intensified after US Vice-President Dick Cheney`s visit to Azerbaijan in early September.
"As partners, we are cooperating on a plethora of issues. The launch of the commercial service is another step taken within this cooperation. Thanks to this service, we will see a steady increase in bilateral trade and multi-purpose investments."
The US commercial service provides assistance in export transactions to over 100 American cities and 76 countries. Its Baku representation will begin to operate separately in 2009 as the only such office in the Caucasus region.
