State program to boost agricultural output
A program enacted by President Ilham Aliyev will stimulate growth
in agricultural output in Azerbaijan.
The State Program on Reliable Provision of the Population with Foodstuffs in 2008-2015 will reduce imports to the country, easing the country`s dependence on foreign-made goods. Thus, citizens` needs for food will be mostly met on account of domestic production.
The document, which includes five sections, lays out goals to be accomplished in the next seven years and indicates sources of funding. It includes a target of fully meeting Azerbaijan`s demand for grain, a strategic product for the national economy. Moreover, production of meat, dairy, eggs, potatoes and greens is to be increased and arable land expanded by 2015 under the program.
The implementation of the program will allow to double GDP growth in the agricultural sector to 7%.
Azerbaijan`s agricultural output increased in the first half of 2008 by a record of 10.7%, compared to the same period of 2007.
