TeliaSonera plans coop with Azerbaijan in broadband services
Prospects for building an efficient telecommunications infrastructure in Azerbaijan, including cooperation with telecom operators and other issues, were discussed in a meeting between TeliaSonera CEO Lars Nyberg and Azerbaijani Minister of Communication and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov.
Nyberg said at a press conference in Baku on Wednesday that one of the key issues discussed with the Azerbaijani side was cooperation in the development of broadband services. In this context the use of both optical and wireless networks is being considered, he said.
Nyberg said about 90 per cent of the TeliaSonera network traffic accounts for data services. This field has a significant growth and the trend is typical for all markets, including Azerbaijan.
"Of course, Azerbaijan, as well as other telecommunications markets, has developed fixed networks. I hope that as in other markets, the mobile network in Azerbaijan will prevail, which will also contribute to a significant increase in this segment," Nyberg said.
He said the presence of a stable and advanced telecommunications infrastructure is an important component of a developed economy.
Fintur Holdings B. V, in which TeliaSonera owns 74 per cent, has a stake in Azercell, Azerbaijan's leading cellular operator.
