The UN Food and Agriculture Organization is ready to share its experience with Azerbaijan in the use and management of lands, a FAO official said on a visit to Baku Tuesday.

FAO could also assist Azerbaijan in combating animal and plant diseases that are widespread in Azerbaijan’s borderline regions, Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia, Fernanda Guerrieri, told reporters.

"It needs to help Azerbaijan increase knowledge and skills in this regard," Guerrieri said.

In addition, she said the issues of food safety during the export of manufactured products to international markets are very important, and FAO can take an initiative to help Azerbaijan increase knowledge in this area.

"Another sphere that is open for cooperation is to preserve the natural resources available in Azerbaijan. The country has high-quality genetic materials, and it is possible to cooperate in preserving these resources and their transfer to future generations," said Guerrieri.

The FAO official went on to say that Azerbaijan has turned from a country receiving assistance into one which itself can assist other countries in the field of agriculture.

"Today, Azerbaijan is able to provide technical assistance in agricultural development to countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan," Guerrieri said.

She said Azerbaijan has vast potential in processing agricultural products and could provide support in this sphere to West African countries and other states in need of such assistance.

"FAO has special assistance programs, and Azerbaijan could participate in them," Guerrieri added.
