Aliyev attends groundbreaking of major airport terminal

BAKU – President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday attended the groundbreaking of a new terminal at the international airport of Baku that will be on par with the best in the world.

Jahangir Asgarov, President of Azerbaijan Airlines (AzAL), which ordered the project, said the international terminal covering an area of 58,000 square meters will be supplied with cutting-edge equipment. After it is commissioned, the Baku airport will meet a projected demand of 3 million passengers per year, he said.

Construction work at the terminal, being constructed by the London-based Arup company, began with the completion of a new entrance tollgate in October 2010. The bulk of the remaining operations is to finish in 2013.

The aim of the aesthetic design is to create spaces which encourage relaxation and minimize stress. This is achieved through generously-proportioned, naturally-lit spaces with extensive internal and external views. The terminal will also offer luxury shopping and leisure areas.

Baku is a seismic zone, and the design uses a frame resistant system to allow for seismic forces. The terminal will have eight air bridges and is compatible with the Boeing 676 aircraft.

Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku is the principal airport of Azerbaijan, and potentially a major hub for the whole of the Caucasus region.
