Azerbaijan aims to boost e-commerce
BAKU – The Azerbaijani government plans to create an Internet economy, given the rampant development of the country’s ICT sector, paving the way for advanced electronic banking, e-commerce and provision of other services online, the communications minister has said.
Ali Abbasov termed this a very prospective area of activity, saying that, for instance, Britain’s revenues from the internet amounted to $220 billion in 2009 alone.
According to him, Azerbaijan’s primary goals also include increasing production in the field, including that of both hardware and software, and exporting ICT products.
Abbasov said Azerbaijan intends to become an ICT infrastructure hub in the region by implementing a variety of projects and rendering services. These plans cover an East-West information corridor, space industry services and other areas.
The minister noted that Azerbaijan will use only 15-20 percent of its satellite that will be launched into space, while other countries will avail of its remaining capacities. He added that the country has already received relevant proposals.
