Inflow of tourists to Azerbaijan rising despite global crunch

The inflow of tourists to Azerbaijan is on the rise, despite a decline worldwide caused by a dire economic crisis. The number of tourists has increased 2 percent in 2009, Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfas Garayev told journalists.
According to him, 2008 was the most challenging period for the world tourism industry, but the inflow of tourists to Azerbaijan rose 40 percent that year. "Thus, taking into account the otucomes of the past two years, we can conclude that the growth rate in this field is 25-30 percent in the country. In the past eleven years, the figure has increased by up to 20-fold."
Garayev said the state program on the development of tourism in Azerbaijan for the period 2010-2016 has been submitted to the Presidential Administration. "Once the program has been approved, another incentive will be given to the development of this sector," he added.*
