Azerfon licensed for 3G services
Azerbaijan’s cellular operator Azerfon has been
licensed by the Ministry of Communications and Information
Technologies to provide new services based on "third-generation" 3G
technologies.
The service, which is expected to be affordable, will be available in the coming days. It will be rendered using 2.1 GHz frequency, the company said.
Azerfon may begin applying the standard shortly not only in Baku and the entire Absheron Peninsula but also in the country’s regions. The company, which has long been working on the project, has already installed 3G base stations in a number of Azerbaijani regions.
The advanced standard, developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), enables the use of high-speed data transfer, video-phones and mobile TV services.
Cutting-edge 3G technologies are being applied in a number of countries, and, in some, cellular communication based on the remarkable fourth-generation technologies is already available.
In business since 2007, Azerfon runs a network covering 80 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory and has about 1.5 million customers in the country with a population of over 8 million people. This year, the company became a partner of Vodafone, the world's biggest mobile phone group by sales.
Two other cellular providers operating in the country – Azercell and Bakcell – were not granted licenses for 3G services. Mushfig Amirov, the communications ministry’s spokesman, said their bids had been declined due to improper submission of relevant documentation.*
