Azercell posts high results in 2008
Azerbaijan`s leading cellular operator, Azercell, reported a successful year in 2008 amid increasing competition around the world and in spite of the economic crisis, the company`s president says.
Ali Agan told a press conference reviewing last year`s outcomes on Monday that Azercell invested $72.1 million in the development of telecommunications in the country in 2008. Since the start of operations in Azerbaijan, the cellular provider`s investments totaled $1 billion.
Agan went on to say that Azercell paid taxes totaling $163m last year. Its contributions accounted for 10% of all taxes collected in Azerbaijan`s non-oil sector.
According to the Azercell president, the company currently holds a 60% share of the domestic communications market and its services encompass 80% of the country`s territory. 99.6% of the Azerbaijani population live within the area served by Azercell`s services.
Agan said Azercell presently has 3.5 million subscribers in the country of over 8 million, with the figure expected to reach 4 million by the end of 2009.
Further, he said the cellular operator intends to lower its fees soon for both local and international calls. However, he did not specify the amount of the reductions.
Agan said that Azercell is placing an emphasis on socially-oriented projects. For instance, the company spent $2.5 million on social initiatives in 2008. The total investments in social projects over the past 10 years amounted to $11.5 million.
