Azeri shipments to rise
The Azerbaijan State Caspian Shipping Company intends to increase cargo shipments this year. The chairman of the company, Aydin Bashirov, has said that the increase will mainly occur due to the growth in oil shipments, with more than 13 million tons of oil products scheduled for transportation in 2009.
Bashirov added that Azerbaijan would buy a 13,000-ton tanker to transport Caspian oil.
"The Caspian Shipping Company will also transport the oil produced by Chevron in Kazakhstan to the Sangachal Terminal [a major facility that holds Azerbaijan`s oil]. This will constitute 4 million tons a year," he said.
The CSC chairman said further that 20 Azerbaijan ships had been allowed to navigate in the Russian waters. At the same time, Russia has denied access to vessels more than 30 years old.
According to Bashirov, the main task today is to upgrade the obsolete dry cargo fleet.
There are currently 16 Azerbaijani ships in the Black Sea. They are engaged in dry cargo shipments between European and Arab countries.
