The 42nd World Chess Olympiad 2016 that originally was scheduled for September 14 in Baku, Azerbaijan has been rescheduled for September 1.

The major chess event that will be staged in Baku for the first time in the history of Azerbaijan was rescheduled given that the academic year in the country starts on September 15.

Thus, the organizers decided to move the dates, and now the event will run between September 1 and 14.

The 2016 FIDE Congress, will take its place, accordingly, on September 4-14 2016.

The significant tournament will host about 2,000 chess masters from 175 countries and the number of guests is expected to reach up to 3,000.

The FIDE General Assembly has awarded the 2016 World Chess Olympiad to Baku back in July 2012. FIDE received three bids for hosting the 2016 Olympiad: from Tallinn (Estonia), Albena (Bulgaria) and Baku (Azerbaijan). At the General Assembly it became clear that Tallinn had withdrawn their bid, and that Albena had not included the organization of the 2015 World Cup in their bid.

The tournament will take place at the unusual shape building Baku Crystal Hall once hosting Eurovision Song Contest in 2012.
