Four events to watch at baku 2015 today
Highlights for Tuesday 23 June at the European Games
1. Crossing swords
Fencing, from 09:00
The Fencing competition finally gets underway at Crystal Hall with
the women's individual epee and the men's individual sabre.
Germany’s 2008 Olympic champion and 2012 Olympic silver medallist
Britta Heidemann is returning after a foot injury, but is still one
to watch in the epee, as are world no.2 Ana Maria Branza of Romania
and Estonia’s world no.3 Erika Kirpu. The top competitor in the
men's sabre is Romanian world no.3 Tiberiu Dolniceanu.
2. Crowd pullers
Badminton, from 09:00
Russia's European champions Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov are
hopeful the crowd will get behind them as they seek a second win in
the men's doubles against Turkish pair Emre Vural and Sinan Zorlu
in Group B at 19:20. "There's a good relationship between our
countries and maybe if the Azerbaijanis come to support their
players they will come to support us as their friends as well,"
Ivanov said.
3. 'Mini Phelps' takes to the water
Swimming, from 09:30
The swimming programme, featuring Europe's best teenage performers,
splashes into life with the first chance to see Russian phenomenon
Arina Openysheva in action. The 16-year-old, who was nicknamed
'Mini Phelps' after winning seven golds at last year's European
junior championships, goes in the 100m freestyle and 4x100m
freestyle relay. Sixteen-year-old Russian Daniil Pakhomov, who will
go in the 50m butterfly, is another to look out for.
4. Quarter-final time
Volleyball, 19:00
Azerbaijan will take on the Netherlands in their quarter-final
clash at Crystal Hall 1 on Tuesday. Both teams finished second in
the pools with four wins each, so expect an enthralling encounter
that is likely to go to five sets.
