German diver: Medals not as important as competing
The purpose of participation in the first European Games in Baku is not to win medals, but the participation itself, a European Games participant, diver from Germany Cao-Tre Le Nguyen told reporters in Baku June 21.
Le Nguyen performed in the first stage of the competitions in springboard diving, having scored 439.30 points, which secured him a spot in the finals.
He noted the importance of participating in the Games because of the competitions’ significance and their high-level organization.
“The first four jumps were not so successful for me, but, nevertheless, I managed to catch up, which makes me happy,” he said. “My rivals, of course, are strong and I could mention athletes from Russia and the UK among the contenders for victory.”
The European Games that kicked off June 12, will last till June 28. There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.
More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
