Armenian Diaspora vs official Yerevan: which is worse?
By Laman Sadigova
The Diaspora civic organization "Armenian revival" issued a sharp criticism of the official Yerevan a few days ago. The organization called the authorities to stop the violence against the people and stressed the legality of peaceful disobedience of Armenian people as a form of struggle provided by the Constitution.
The statement called on all the Armenians of the Diaspora not to be indifferent for the situation taking place in the country and to support people’s fight.
While Armenia has a modest population of about 3 million people, ethnic Armenians spread across the whole world are as many as 8 million.
At first sight, it might seem like the Diaspora is fighting against the government’s illegal and violent acts against the population. However, most likely, it follows its own goals.
Armenian Diaspora, which donates big amounts of money in the poor post Soviet country, demands a simple “respect” from the government. However, it seems like the Armenian government thinks differently…
The root of these discrepancies is obvious - Diaspora sees in the face of the official Yerevan not just a political opponent but its potential "undertaker."
They believe that the Armenian authorities are ready to make concessions to the so-called Armenian 'genocide' and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This step will inevitably diminish the role of Diaspora and lead to abolition of many Armenian organizations existing on the donations from the Diaspora. To be more precise, Armenia with problems is in the interest of Diaspora.
Obviously, sooner or later, Yerevan will have to put up with Ankara and Baku due to the economic and political realities.
Weak Armenia, left alone in the region due to its aggressive policy towards its neighboring countries, simply cannot survive in a situation when its economy is collapsed and the population who still live in Armenia, survive only because transfers from abroad.
The question is why people here have to suffer for the sake of the Diaspora’s prosperity?
Armenian population remains locked between two powers, struggling with each other. As a result, the country is falling apart piece by piece.
Recent protests, including protests against the electricity tariffs price hike, the calls for the government’s change are only the first harbingers of the upcoming storm. The future of poverty-stricken Armenia remains unclear, however, all the factors indicate that the changes are approaching.
So, the Diaspora and Yerevan are on the brink of rupture and only time will tell at what point it will happen.
